AMERICAN SOUP

Written by Mary Jane Hansen

Andy Warhol returns! A celebration of pop culture and the landmarks of history on the evolution of the American spirit, all set to iconic music from the last 50 years. Warhol’s philosophy is juxtaposed with the adventures of an Italian-American family in Queens, NY living the country’s highs and lows, loves and disappointments. Live music from the 60s to the turn of the millennium provokes a visit to where & who we were. AMERICAN SOUP reminds us that there is hope even during our darkest times; every end gives way to a new beginning. Presented by iTheatre Saratoga (a division of The Creative Place International) and back by popular demand for the Holiday season!

CPI AND THE NATIONAL MUSEUM OF DANCE PRESENT

THE TALL BOY

Written by Simon Bent / Based on the short story "The Lost" by Kay Boyle

CPI presents famed actress Tandy Cronyn’s production of this compelling WWII drama that explores the timely discussion of refugees and racism. Based on Kay Boyle’s short story, The Lost, THE TALL BOY is set in Germany in the aftermath of World War II, and compellingly examines the predicament of three European orphans. Swept up by American Army units towards the end of the war, the boys see their GI buddies as family and are determined to return with them to the United States. In 1946 the U.S. isn’t accepting many refugees, and only one boy has been befriended by a soldier willing to adopt him. But that soldier happens to be black. Join us as Tandy (daughter of the legendary theatrical couple Jessica Tandy and Hume Cronyn) brings her dramatic one woman show to the Riggi Theater.

From Asia, Old Europe, the Middle East, and First Nations America are classic tales handed down by our neighbors to the North. Sure, there are the stereotypical princesses in need of saving and malevolent Sultans, but there are also cunning, resourceful, and independent-minded young people. We depend on them in the original stories and modern makeovers we propose in order to save the day. Out of the ashes of olden times a brand new play, The Golden Phoenix and More French-Canadian Fairy Tales, will rise.

SPECIAL THEATER WORKSHOP OPPORTUNITY

Young participants will challenge themselves in an environment accessible to ages 8 and up;  we all have important opinions of right and wrong, strength and weakness, love and hate and most of life that lies somewhere in between. The input of all the artists—on stage and off—is not just suggested, but rather the building blocks of this project. The coordinators of the program are looking forward to demonstrating to our audiences the astonishing capacity of our youth.

CPI still has a few openings for this special children's program. If your child is interested please call 518-584-7780 for more details. Ages 10 - 14 welcome, no fee to participate. Starts July 5th!

AFTER A SUCCESSFUL OFF-BROADWAY RUN AT 59E59 THEATERS IN NYC, CPI IS PROUD TO TRAVEL TO BARRINGTON STAGE FOR A SPECIAL LIMITED RUN OF KUNSTLER, A NEW PLAY BY JEFFREY SWEET, STARRING BROADWAY'S JEFF McCARTHY, AND DIRECTED BY MEAGEN FAY!

Join CPI at Barrington Stage in the Berkshires for Kunstler, for the new play by Jeffrey Sweet. See the production that the Boston Globe hailed as one of the top three not-to-be missed theater events in New England this summer. Starring Broadway's Jeff McCarthy and directed by Meagen Fay.

MAY 18 - JUNE 10
AT BARRINGTON STAGE COMPANY
30 UNION STREET
PITTSFIELD, MA 01201

Broadway star Jeff McCarthy brings William Kunstler back to life in Jeffrey Sweet's fascinating play, which revisits Kunstler's timely message of Constitutional civil rights under rule of law in an exciting theatrical event.

In Jeffrey Sweet’s play, Kunstler says, “My job starts when I see the forces of government cloaking itself in the garb of legality and going after someone who is at a particular disadvantage—whether it’s because of race or some existing prejudice or stereotype—it’s my impulse to try to level the playing field.” Kunstler’s often unpopular views made him the target of vicious criticism, but he changed the American legal system anyway.

A LEGEND OF SLEEPY HOLLOW
by Mary Jane Hansen
based on the classic Washington Irving story
A headless skeleton is unearthed in Sleepy Hollow reopening an old mystery and a few unsettled grievances.  But trespassing into forbidden territory is likely to reawaken something far more menacing, and perhaps inhuman.  Attorney and former Vice President Aaron Burr enlists the help of a burgeoning man-of-letters, none other than Washington Irving, to bring order to the village and offer an explanation for some rather curious phenomena. Set in early 19th century New York, A Legend of Sleepy Hollow celebrates the rich history of the time and offers a fictional genesis and a look at the inspirational forces behind one of America’s most celebrated and original tales.

Continuing a tradition of sharing box office proceeds from its productions with other area charities, The Creative Place International (CPI) has distributed a total of $4,552.50 to six area charities who worked with CPI to gather an audience for SARATOGA CHIPS performances at The Arts Center in Saratoga August 1-11.

Beneficiaries of the CPI proceeds-sharing initiative are: St. Clement’s Church, Maple Ave. Middle School Musical Club, The Brave Will Foundation, Saratoga County Children’s Committee, Shelters of Saratoga and the Yaddo Garden Association.

The Children’s Committee said, “Our committee was honored to have been chosen to receive half of the proceeds from ticket sales that night and were delighted to work with such a talented group of theatre professionals. Quality and professionalism describes our experience in every way! Volunteers helping other volunteers...it doesn't get any better than that!”

Kathy Mattes of the Yaddo Garden Association said, “We were thrilled to partner with CPI's multi-talented theatre professionals.  It was great to collaborate with another group of dedicated volunteers to support the community.”

SARATOGA CHIPS was specifically commissioned by CPI to be part of the Saratoga 150 Celebration, marking the Saratoga Race Course sesquicentennial as the oldest continuously operating sports venue in the nation. Corporate sponsors of SARATOGA CHIPS included The Adirondack Trust Company, Healthy Living Market and Café, E. Stewart Jones Law Firm, Mohawk Honda, Price Chopper’s Golub Foundation, Stewart’s Shops and Stuyvesant Plaza, Inc.

Acclaimed by audiences at The Arts Center, SARATOGA CHIPS, by Saratoga playwright Mary Jane Hansen, revisits the Spa City’s colorful history during the time of the Civil War when the Saratoga Race Course was founded. The play is an entertaining theatrical adventure, combining history, comedy and music from Saratoga’s Victorian era and featuring many of the personalities of the time, including Commodore Cornelius Vanderbilt, Mark Twain, Madame Jumel, Saratoga Track Founder John Morrissey and President Ulysses S. Grant.

Working toward accomplishing its mission to provide cultural resources to the community, The Creative Place International will present workshops for young people and adults wishing to hone their performing and/or writing skills and is planning another theatrical production in the spring as well as next summer.

In the future, CPI will continue to partner with not-for-profit organizations and will also work toward establishing a modest theatrical facility in Saratoga Springs where CPI and other performing arts organizations in need of a legitimate theatre space can present their work in a professional setting for both artists and audiences.

SARATOGA CHIPS RECAP...

Thank you for joining us in downtown Saratoga Springs for another season of entertaining Theatre, as we presented SARATOGA CHIPS in honor of the 150th anniversary of America's Oldest Sporting Venue!

SARATOGA CHIPS

From the Discovery of Water to the Eradication of Crime in the Racing City

a new play with music

by Mary Jane Hansen

Water,Turf, Air & Fire. Add in some smoking hot oil and the almighty dollar and you have a story as old as anyone can remember, and a few new inventions along the way. The fundamental constituents of the universe hold sway in SARATOGA CHIPS, but a few man-made elements like currency & crime, celebrity & and scandal reign supreme. From the gambling houses to the springs, from the piazzas of the grand hotels to the Graveyard of Favorites, see what happens when historical characters collide in the town you thought you knew. Commodore Vanderbilt, Mark Twain, Ulysses S. Grant, Mrs. Grant, Madame Jumel, John Morrissey and Mrs. Morrissey and aeronaut Carlotta Meyers are just a few of the famous names that pass through SARATOGA CHIPS, an entertaining evening of history, comedy and music from Saratoga's Victorian era.

Expanding on CPI's early tradition of sharing the wealth--however modest--among fellow non-profit organizations, seven (7!) Saratoga area charities had their own benefit performance of SARATOGA CHIPS during the play's run at The Arts Center August 1-11, 2013. Each organization received half of the box office proceeds generated by their benefit performance. A great opportunity to support a favorite charity, see a great play and help CPI bring more cultural resources to the community.

Thanks to our sponsors, CPI is working to enhance the Saratoga cultural scene with professional theatre. We are grateful to HEALTHY LIVING MARKET AND CAFE, THE ADIRONDACK TRUST COMPANY, E. STEWART JONES LAW FIRM, STEWART'S SHOPS, PRICE CHOPPER'S GOLUB FOUNDATION and STUYVESANT PLAZA for their generous support of CPI's work.
